Slater Families,

I want to wish you all a very happy and joyous New Year! All of us at Slater are excitedly looking forward to 2018 and the opportunities it will provide our students and community. However, while every New Year makes promises of exciting new changes and self-improvement, we, at Slater, strive to create consistency, comfort, and compassion: the best antidotes to the anxiety that every New Year can bring. We try to carefully balance the restless need for constant improvement with the steady consistency and structure every child needs to truly thrive.

I take great pride in the fact that Slater has been a steady and reliable community presence for almost 65 years. But all of this is not to say we are complacent or not driven by a constant desire to improve, every day. One of our improvement initiatives, over the last several years, has been Professional Learning Communities (PLCs). Our PLCs create a school-wide mindset that we are all lifelong learners: that I will be better tomorrow than I am today. Our PLC mindset causes teachers to relentlessly improve opportunities for teaching and learning, for all of our students.

Our level of curricular depth and sophistication has greatly expanded over the last several years. I am constantly in other schools and speak with other principals, and all of those observations have proved to me how much Slater is on the cutting edge of curricular understanding.  While we outpace our counterparts at many other schools, all of our staff understands how much more we need to improve in order to provide a world-class education at Slater, where there is such wonderful, but also challenging diversity.

On top of our PLC work, we have also provided 1:1 technology for our students in grades 3rd through 6th. We just allocated considerable funds in order to bring 2nd grade into the 1:1 world later this month. Restorative Practices has been another important initiative and game changer for us, that has caused us to rethink how we engage with student conflict and how we can better empower our students to solve their own conflicts and better engage with one another.

There are so many exciting things happening at Slater, so much new learning. But on top of and within that lies a school that deeply cherishes and loves our kids. As a staff, we feel so blessed and fortunate that you allow us the chance to be part of your child’s life and your family’s life. Thank you!

Wishing you all a joyous New Year,

Andy Schrant, Principal
