Slater Families,

Below is a snapshot of our work and lives at Slater during this month of October...

School Performance Framework Rating
We saw wonderful growth on our English Language Arts and Math CMAS tests last spring. Because of this and other indicators, we are no longer on "priority improvement" as determined by the Colorado Department of Education. We have earned the rating of "improvement", meaning we are only one rating below the highest rating possible: "performance". While all of us at Slater are proud that the state's SPF rating is only one indicator of our performance and quality, it is, nonetheless, an important data point that we all take very seriously. If you are interested in more specifics about our rating, please attend our 10/12 SAC-PTA meeting at 6:00 p.m in the library.

Jeffco Fall Break, No School on 10/13
We will not have school for students and staff on Friday, 10/13 due to the district-wide Fall Break. October can be a difficult time for students and families as the novelty of the new school year has worn off and the routines of daily life have settled back in. Please take time to enjoy your family and get some much needed relaxation and recharge time!

Halloween Celebration

We will celebrate Halloween on Tuesday, 10/31 with our K-6 parade and classroom parties beginning around 1:00. Students are not allowed to wear costumes in the morning as they will change into costumes before 1:00. Please help us by making sure costumes are appropriate for school by not having gore and sexuality. Students are not allowed to have weapons as part of their costumes. If you are able to help coordinate your child's party, please reach out to his/her teacher.

SAC-PTA Meeting 10/12
Our School Accountability Committee (SAC) and Parent Teacher Association (PTA) meetings are always the 2nd Thursday of each month 6:00-7:30 p.m. Our next meeting will be October 12th. This is an important opportunity for us to better engage with our families and for our families to engage with the school on a deeper level.
This month's SAC agenda will focus on last year's testing data and our School Performance Framework rating and what we are doing to continue our improvement efforts.

Literacy Night 10/19

Our Literacy Night tradition returns to Slater this year! We will celebrate a fun night of literacy in the early evening of Thursday, 10/19. Families will spend an hour making take-home literacy activities, listening to stories, and reading with their kids; all the while enjoying treats and trinkets. More information to come...

Drop Off Safety
We really need everyone's help to ensure that students are not dropped off on 23rd Avenue. We do not have many parking spaces in front of the school. The safest place to drop off students is in the Hug and Go driveway just east of the building. I know many parents want to watch their child walk through the front doors, but we have plenty of adult supervision on duty before 7:50, so please drop off and go and we will make sure your child gets in safely. Again, all of this is intended to keep people from dropping off in the middle of 23rd Avenue.

Next No-Student Contact Day, 11/3 (No School)
Students will not have school on Friday, 11/3 due to the Lakewood Area's non-student contact day. Every school in Jeffco has at least a half day for students on these days, five times throughout the year (9/22, 11/3, 2/16, 3/16, and 4/27). Within the Lakewood Area and in other parts of the districts, staffs will be engaged in professional learning to improve the ways in which students learn and we teach.

Headwear Prohibitions at Slater
A quick reminder that students are not allowed to wear hats, hoods, and kooky headbands (such as animal ears headbands). We value our students being able to represent themselves as individuals through acceptable fashion, but these items often do not contribute to a conducive learning environment.

We are chugging at full speed and are very proud of our students and staff. Please feel free to come by to chat with any of us or spend some time at school. We'd love to see you at Slater! Or always feel free to call or see me with any concerns or questions.

Have a great October!
