Social Emotional Learning
Social Emotional Learning at Slater Elementary School
Just like math, reading and writing, kids can be taught social skills at school.
Kids need support to learn how to be students.
They need to learn how to handle big feelings, treat others with respect and navigate through more complicated social relationships, as they get older.
At Slater, kids receive DIRECT instruction on social and emotional issues using curriculum such as Second Step. Some classes get direct instruction from a Prevention Specialist from Jefferson Center for Mental Health.

What is PBIS?
Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a framework for teaching and organizing evidence-based behavioral interventions into an integrated system in order to provide a continuum of supports to enhance the academic and social success of EVERY student. The PBIS framework is a school-wide approach that focuses on building safe and positive school environments in which all students can learn.
PBIS at Slater
Slater implements PBIS to establish and maintain a safe and effective school environment that maximizes academic achievement and behavioral competence of all learners. Through PBIS, we teach our children the principles of good behavior, reward students for positive behavior and intervene for inappropriate behavior in order to support our students to be responsible and self-directed.
Slater's detailed supports are implemented schoolwide!
- At Slater, we offer 3 tiers of support to our students:
Top Gator
Top Gator is a monthly award that recognizes Slater students for showing outstanding habits of character during their time in school — both in person and while remote learning. Each classroom teacher nominates a student from their classroom.
When a student is chosen as their classroom's Top Gator, they receive an adorable Top Gator t-shirt and a Top Gator Certificate to bring home.
